After a heartbreaking loss on Friday, the Los Angeles Dodgers rebounded with a 5-2 win against the San Diego Padres, led by a stellar outing from Gavin Stone.

The Padres could not get to Stone for most of the night as he worked five perfect innings. He ran into trouble for the first time in the sixth inning when he walked the leadoff hitter.

Although Stone induced a double play from the next batter, the Padres broke up the no-hitter with a single and put runners at the corners with another single. Fernando Tatís Jr. then broke his shutout with an RBI double.

Stone went back out for the seventh inning and he recorded two more outs, but Ha-Seong Kim doubled and Tyler Wade drove him in with a single.

That ended Stone’s night as he finished his outing with 6.2 innings pitched, allowing two runs on five hits with four strikeouts and one walk. It was the deepest he’s pitched into a game during his career.

Amid all the talk about the bottom of the Dodgers’ lineup failing to produce, they carried the offense for much of the night, along with Mookie Betts. All three of the Dodgers 7-9 hitters, Outman, Hernández and Lux, had a hit in the game and a run scored.

In the fourth inning, James Outman singled and Gavin Lux walked to set the table for Betts, who delivered with an RBI single to put the Dodgers up 1-0.

They came through again in the sixth inning when Kiké Hernández singled following Max Muncy being hit by a pitch to put two runners on. Lux then singled to put the Dodgers up 2-1.

That was followed by another single from Betts to increase the Dodgers lead once again, and Shohei Ohtani capped off the inning with a sacrifice fly to give the Dodgers a 4-1 lead.

The Dodgers added some insurance in the seventh when Toescar Hernández singled and ended up on third base following a throwing error from Tatís. Muncy followed with a sac fly to put the Dodgers up by three runs.

Following Stone, Michael Grove got the Dodgers out of the seventh inning before Daniel Hudson worked a scoreless eighth. Evan Phillips was called upon for the save and secured the win.

Dodgers and Padres benches clear

Some tensions rose in the fifth inning in the midst of Stone’s dominant outing. With the Padres still yet to reach base, Jurickson Profar attempted to get in the young starter’s mind by showing bunt.

The next pitch was then up and in to Profar, who was not happy with that. He and Will Smith exchanged some words before the benches cleared.

No fights ended up breaking out and Profar ended up chasing the first pitch in the dirt following the delay before flying out to center field.
