Freddie Freeman continued his hot hitting and the Los Angeles Dodgers lineup collectively had an encouraging performance in an 8-4 comeback win against the Cincinnati Reds.
Much like Tony Gonsolin from the night prior, Tyler Anderson labored a bit through his start. The southpaw went five innings and exited with the game tied after allowing four runs (three earned).
The bulk of Anderson’s troubles came in the second inning, when back-to-back doubles by Kyle Farmer and Donovan Solano gave the Reds a 1-0 lead. Anderson nearly induced an inning-ending double play but a successful challenge left runners at the corners.
Trea Turner nearly bailed out Anderson with a tremendous diving stop, only to make a low throw to first base that skipped under’s Freeman glove. A wild pitch from Anderson then allowed the Reds to extend their lead to 3-1.
The Dodgers began their comeback on Will Smith’s RBI single in the third inning, and took a lead in the fifth. Freeman cashed in a Gavin Lux leadoff double with an RBI single, Chris Taylor was later hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Justin Turner’s sacrifice fly put the Dodgers ahead 4-3.
That was short-lived, however, Albert Almora Jr. hit his second home run of the series in the bottom of the fifth.
Freeman then broke the tie with a leadoff home run in the seventh inning. Trayce Thompson’s first hit since being back with the Dodgers was a two-run double in the eighth to provide some insurance, and Trea Turner’s sacrifice fly capped off the three-run inning.
Although Turner contributed at the plate, his hitting streak was snapped at 13 games.
Dodgers bullpen backs Anderson
Anderson was aided by Chris Taylor’s throw home in the fifth inning for a double play that kept the game tied, and picked up by the Dodgers bullpen after exiting.
Alex Vesia, Yency Almonte, Daniel Hudson and Craig Kimbrel each threw a scoreless inning.
