Tony Gonsolin ran into a world of trouble in the third inning but was rescued by the Los Angeles Dodgers putting together an emphatic response for a 13-7 comeback win against the San Diego Padres.

With that, the Dodgers took the wraparound series at Petco Park and improved to 8-2 against the Padres this season. L.A. went 14-5 against San Diego last year but were eliminated by them in the National League Division Series.

After Gonsolin efficiently got through two scoreless innings, the Padres suddenly erupted as their first five batters reached safely in the third. The stretch included a two-run home run from Luis Campusano and concluded on a double from Fernando Tatis Jr. that drove in a pair.

Manny Machado’s sacrifice fly extended the Padres’ lead to 5-0 before Gonsolin could get out of the inning.

The Dodgers immediately went to work on erasing their deficit with what ended up being a 13-1 flurry to finish out the game. David Peralta’s RBI double in the fourth got them on the scoreboard and Jason Heyward’s extra-base hit drove in two more.

Miguel Rojas’ RBI single with the bases loaded got the Dodgers within a run, and Mookie Betts followed that by connecting on a 3-0 pitch for his sixth career grand slam.

The Dodgers’ eight runs marked their most scored in a single inning this season. It previously was seven runs scored in the fifth inning against the Colorado Rockies on April 3.

The Dodgers went on to break the game open with a five-run sixth inning that saw contributions from Kiké Hernández, Will Smith, Max Muncy and Peralta. Hernández’s home run was his first since being traded to the Dodgers.

Every player in the Dodgers lineup had at least one hit.

After Gonsolin pitched six innings, Joe Kelly struck out the side in the seventh and Bryan Hudson allowed a solo homer to Campusano as part of pitching two frames to finish out the win.

Dodgers grand slam record

Betts helped the Dodgers tie a franchise record with their 11th grand slam of the season, matching the 2021 team.

Overall, the 2023 Dodgers are the 18th team in MLB history with at least 11 grand slams in one season. The 2000 Oakland Athletics and 2006 Cleveland Guardians share the MLB record with 14 grand slams in a single year.
