Recap: Austin Barnes Ejected; Dodgers Lose Series To Diamondbacks

Little went right for the Los Angeles Dodgers in their 11-6 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks. The third consecutive loss dropped the Dodgers to 5-5 this season as their road trip continues with a matchup against the San Francisco Giants.

David Peralta gave the Dodgers a 1-0 lead in the first inning by driving an RBI double to left field that brought in Mookie Betts from first base. However, it was all Diamondbacks from that point forward as Michael Grove and the Dodgers bullpen struggled.

Pavin Smith’s RBI double in the bottom of the first tied the game and Corbin Carroll’s base hit put the Diamondbacks ahead. In the second inning, Jake McCarthy took advantage of a lackadaisical effort from James Outman to stretch a leadoff single into a double.

J.D. Martinez’s RBI triple and a sacrifice fly from Miguel Vargas tied the game in the third inning, only for the Diamondbacks to immediately answer back.

Singles by Alek Thomas and Nick Ahmed in the bottom of the third combined to bring in three runs that gave Arizona a decided lead. Smith’s second double of the game brought in two runs in the fourth inning, and McCarthy’s single plated another.

Michael Grove was chased with one out in the fourth inning and ultimately charged for nine runs. The 12 hits Grove allowed set a career high.

Geraldo Perdomo’s two-run single in the fifth inning broke the game open.

The Dodgers didn’t mount much of a comeback, but Martinez hit an RBI double and Vargas added a run-scoring triple in the eighth inning, and Trayce Thompson added a base hit to bring in Will Smith in the ninth.

Dodgers catching plans change

Austin Barnes started at catcher on Sunday as the Dodgers plan to have Smith behind the plate for all three games against the Giants. However, Barnes was ejected in the fifth inning for arguing balls and strikes with home-plate umpire Lance Barrett.

The ejection was Barnes’ first of his career and it forced Smith into action to finish out the game.
