Preview: Dodgers Continue Homestand, Begin 4-Game Series With Giants

After taking three of four games from the Chicago Cubs this past weekend, the Los Angeles Dodgers continue their homestand and begin a four-game series with the rival San Francisco Giants.

Pacing the National League with 48 wins, the Dodgers enter Monday holding an impressive 10.5-game lead over the second-place Colorado Rockies in the NL West. The Giants, on the flip side, remain in the cellar with a 30-39 record and trail Los Angeles by a whopping 16.5 games.

Despite being on the opposite spectrum of the Major League ladder, the Dodgers have posted a modest 5-4 record against the Giants this season. The two teams last faced off earlier this month at Oracle Park, where Los Angeles won two out of the three contests.

Looking to continue that trend, they sends Kenta Maeda to the mound for his 14th start of the season. He enters with a 7-3 record, 3.89 ERA, 4.23 FIP and 1.09 WHIP in 71.2 innings on the year.

Maeda struggled a bit in his last start against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on June 11, yielding seven baserunners and five runs over 4.1 innings of work. He was charged with his first loss since April 23 as a result.

In his career against the Giants, Maeda is 4-3 with a 4.04 ERA and 1.58 WHIP across 42.1 innings pitched (12 games, eight starts). He previously tossed five shutout innings against San Francisco in his lone start against them this season on April 29.

Pitching at Dodger Stadium this year, the 31-year-old is a perfect 5-0 with a dominant 1.69 ERA and 0.72 WHIP in 32 innings (five starts).

Opposing Maeda is fellow right-hander Tyler Beede, who has struggled mightily in the early going of his 2019 campaign. He enters with an 0-2 record, 8.06 ERA, 6.18 FIP and 2.06 WHIP in 22.1 innings pitched thus far (six games, four starts).

Beede’s most recent outing against the San Diego Padres on June 11 didn’t quite go as according to plan, as he allowed seven baserunners and four runs in just 4.2 innings pitched.

Over his last two starts, Beede has accrued an 8.38 ERA and 1.65 WHIP in 9.2 innings of work. Prior to this recent stetch, he had allowed a combined two runs over 8.1 innings pitched — good for a solid 2.16 ERA.

Monday’s start marks Beede’s first career appearance against the Dodgers. On the road this season, he has struggled to the tune of an 0-3 record, 9.47 ERA and 2.16 WHIP in 19 innings pitched (five games, four starts).
