Preview: Dodgers Call On Brock Stewart For Second Career Start

The Los Angeles Dodgers debuts of Josh Reddick and Jesse Chavez were ruined Tuesday, as the Colorado Rockies came away with a 7-3 victory in the opener of a three-game series at Coors Field.

Due to off days, the Dodgers have gone without a fifth starter for a couple weeks now, and although Wednesday would be Kenta Maeda’s turn to pitch on normal rest, the club decided to give him an extra day of rest.

With that, Brock Stewart recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City to make his second career big league start.

Stewart’s Major League debut came on the road June 29 against the Milwaukee Brewers. He allowed five runs on eight hits and had eight strikeouts in five innings of work.

The 24-year-old has seen time at three Minor League levels this season, making 18 starts overall.

He’s going a combined 9-3 with a 1.80 ERA and 0.86 WHIP in 110 innings. Stewart made seven starts with OKC, going 4-0 with a 2.95 ERA. Stewart is 1-0 with a 3.00 ERA and 22 strikeouts in four starts with OKC in the time after his Major League debut.

Opposing Stewart for the Rockies is left-hander Tyler Anderson. The rookie has made nine starts since being called up in June, going 3-3 with a 3.33 ERA, 3.00 FIP and 1.28 WHIP.

In six starts at Coors Field, Anderson is 3-1 with a 3.47 ERA. Anderson, like Stewart, has pitched at three different Minor League levels this season. In six Minor-League starts before his call up, Anderson went 2-2 with a 2.35 ERA. Opponents hit .205/.286/.286 in those games.

Kiké Hernandez makes his second start for the Dodgers since returning from left ribcage inflammation. On Sunday he went 1-for-4 with a run scored in his first start back.

Hernandez bats sixth, behind Adrian Gonzalez, who is hitting .304 with three home runs and 16 RBIs since the start of July. Gonzalez has 19 career home runs at Coors Field, which ties him with Matt Kemp for most by an active opponent.

Along with recalling Stewart, Julio Urias and recently-acquired Josh Fields are up from OKC. To clear room on the active roster, Andrew Toles was optioned to Oklahoma City, and Louis Coleman (right shoulder fatigue) and Adam Liberatore (left elbow inflammation, retroactive to July 30) were placed on the 15-day disabled list.
