Mookie Betts: Dodgers ‘Just Gotta Keep Going’ Amid Offensive Struggles

The Los Angeles Dodgers have hit a rough patch of late as they dropped their season-high fourth consecutive game with a 3-1 loss to the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday.

The Dodgers’ recent struggles can be attributed to an inconsistent offense that has struggled to push runs across the plate over the last two weeks. Since May 8, the team is batting a collective .214 and averaging just 3.6 runs per game.

Mookie Betts said the Dodgers have to keep looking forward and figure out a way to get back on track, via Bill Plunkett of the Southern California News Group:

“Just gotta keep going,” Dodgers leadoff man Mookie Betts said. “There’s no words that anybody can say that’s going to make us all of a sudden start hitting. If that was the case, we would have done it a long time ago. So it’s just part of the game. Again, you just gotta figure out a way. There’s nothing nobody can really say or do. Well, I guess there is something — just get it done.”

It is common for teams to go through offensive slumps over the course of a 162-game season, and Betts believes the Dodgers have to simply weather the storm until the group starts hitting again:

“Yeah, that’s exactly what it is,” Betts said of the need for timely hitting. “But I mean — it’s baseball. You’re gonna go through your ups and you’re gonna go through your downs. You just can’t get too low or too high. Just gotta ride the wave. Unfortunately, we’re not getting it done right now. Everyone wants to get it done. It’s not like we’re not trying. But we’re not getting it done. So we gotta figure out a way.”

Even with their current slump, the Dodgers have been one of the better offensive teams in baseball this season. Their offensive WAR of 12.7 and wRC+ of 120 rank second to only the New York Yankees.

Betts has been instrumental to the Dodgers’ success as he is batting an impressive .337/.434/.548 with 14 doubles, three triples, eight home runs and 30 RBI in 53 games.

Mookie Betts prepared for any Dodgers shortstop decision

With the MLB trade deadline just over two months away, there has been speculation over whether the Dodgers will look to acquire an established or keep Betts at the position.

When asked about his future at shortstop or potentially moving back to second base, Betts explained he’s not concerned with either scenario and simply remains focused on contributing.
