The Los Angeles Dodgers and Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation (LADF) partnered with the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health (LACDMH), Brotherhood Crusade, UCLA Health, and Reyes Coca-Cola for two Thanksgiving community events this past week.

The first took place at the St. Joseph Center’s Bread and Roses Cafe in Venice on Wednesday, November 16, as the Dodgers and LACDMH served Thanksgiving meals to individuals experiencing homelessness. Alex Vesia, Yency Almonte and Orel Hershiser represented the Dodgers at the event, joining Dr. Curley L. Bonds, the chief medical officer of the LACDMH.

Hygiene kits and co-branded blankets were also distributed to those in attendance. The Dodgers have provided turkeys to the local community for more than 18 years during the holiday season, and this year they donated $30,000 to six local charities that provide turkeys and trimming to Angelenos in need.

On Friday, LADF partnered with Brotherhood Crusade and Acts Inspired by Mookie (AIM), to host a Thanksgiving Grab and Go drive-thru at Algin Sutton Recreation Center in South Los Angeles, which is the home to Dodgers Dreamfields Nos. 1 and 50.

Mookie Betts and his wife Brianna joined volunteers in distributing groceries for Thanksgiving meals, including 1,000 turkeys, fixings, and dessert. Each family also received a kit with personal protective equipment from UCLA Health.

A portion of the funds for the event came from a larger LADF grant of $126,000 to support Brotherhood Crusade and their food insecurity efforts as part of their 50 Feeds LA campaign. Together with Betts and AIM, LADF will support Brotherhood Crusade to provide more than 400,000 meals over the course of 2022 and 2023.

Dodgers part-owner Magic Johnson partnered with Feed The Children & GM for holiday event

Dodgers part-owner Magic Johnson kicked off the holiday season by partnering with Feed the Children and General Motors to give back in his home state of Michigan.

Johnson went to Second Ebenezer Baptist Church in Detroit to give out supplies to more than 800 families to help make their Thanksgiving and holiday season better. Each family was given fresh food, canned goods, water, coats, toys, books and more by Johnson and the volunteers.

The NBA Hall of Famer was born in Lansing, which is roughly an hour and a half from Detroit, and his father Earvin Sr. worked for GM as an assembly worker. Feed the Children is a non-profit organization working to make sure children have food to eat by distributing donations of food and other items.
