MLB Rumors: 2020 Draft Expected To Be Shortened To 5 Rounds

The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic not only led to Major League Baseball cancelling remaining Spring Training games and indefinitely delaying the start of the 2020 regular season, it has also impacted matters off the field.

More specifically on the business side of the sport, where ticket refunds, players’ salaries and pay for umpires have taken turns in the spotlight. With each of those addressed, next figures to be the 2020 MLB Draft.

In late March there was speculation this year’s Draft would be cancelled or postponed in some part due to limited or nonexistent scouting opportunities over the final weeks leading up to when players would be selected.

While that no longer appears to be the case, the 2020 Draft is likely to be significantly reduced and last only five rounds, per J.J. Cooper of Baseball America

Nothing is finalized yet, as no official word has been relayed, but there is plenty of expectation in scouting circles and among GMs that the draft will be limited to five rounds.

The MLB Draft has been 40 rounds since 2012, and if this year’s event is limited to just five, it will represent a reduction in players taken by more than 85%. On top of a change with rounds, draft bonus payments are expected to be delayed.

The maximum up-front payment in 2020 and 2021 will be $100,000 within 30 days of an approved contract, 50% of the remaining value will be paid on July 1 the next year, then the balance on July 1 two years later. Undrafted players cannot get more than $20,000 in both the 2020 and 2021 drafts.

The Draft is a big reason why the Los Angeles Dodgers have been able to maintain one of the best farm systems in baseball in recent years despite boasting one of the top records and winning seven consecutive National League West titles.

One benefit that an organization like the Dodgers will have with the 2020 class is the ability to sign undrafted players.

With all teams only able to offer $20,000, it’s reasonable to believe the Dodgers’ history of developing players, as well as their winning tradition, will help them land some of the best available players.

Looking further down the line, commissioner Rob Manfred has the authority to shorten the 2021 MLB Draft to 20 rounds and move it to as late as July 20 if necessary.
