Candy Digital, an up-and-coming digital collectible company, announced a long-term agreement with Major League Baseball to exclusively produce non-fungible tokens (NFTs).

Candy Digital is being launched by three of the most respected figures in their industries: Michael Rubin, executive chairman of Fanatics; Mike Novogratz, founder and CEO of Galaxy Digital; and Gary Vaynerchuk, a serial entrepreneur and investor.

Candy Digital and MLB’s first release will be an NFT of Lou Gehrig’s famous “Luckiest Man” speech that he delivered on July 4, 1939, after being diagnosed with ALS.

Only one collectible of Gehrig’s speech will be produced. Proceeds from the sale, which is scheduled to be released over the Fourth of July weekend, will support ALS charities. MLB celebrated the Yankees legend this week with the inaugural Lou Gehrig Day.

More MLB NFTs will be available on Candy Digital’s online platform and a secondary market. Fans will have the ability to purchase, collect, view and trade them as they please.

Candy Digital plans to utilize a new NFT ecosystem developed on Ethereum as its core blockchain technology. This will allow the company to keep gas costs low, ensure fast transactions and be more energy efficient than proof of work systems.

Digital collectibles have surged in popularity this year, with a new generation of consumers taking an interest in interactive content.

That perhaps was most evident with the rise of NBA Top Shot, an online marketplace where fans can collect digital moments of their favorite players.

MLB previously entered the NFT space with the Topps Company earlier this year, releasing a limited amount of digital collectibles via the WAX blockchain.

Artwork from the physical 2021 Topps Series 1 Baseball release were digitally enhanced as officially licensed Topps MLB NFT collectibles.

Several Los Angeles Dodgers cards, including Mookie Betts, Clayton Kershaw and Corey Seager, are currently eligible to be purchased on the AtomicHub marketplace.
