The Los Angeles Dodgers left to South Korea on Thursday morning in preparation for their two-game set with the San Diego Padres.

Some doubt surrounding a few members of the Dodgers lineup came into question this past week, mainly that of Max Muncy, who’s battled an illness for multiple days. The 33-year-old hadn’t appeared in a Cactus League game since Saturday and played only once dating back to March 6.

The veteran infielder is among three reported Dodgers who have been sick, including Gavin Lux and assistant pitching coach Connor McGuiness. Out of an abundance of caution, they weren’t in camp on Tuesday.

Although Muncy didn’t play in a Cactus League game since falling under the weather and lost weight, he was part of the Dodgers travel roster for the Seoul Series, per David Vassegh of AM 570 L.A. Sports Radio:

Max Muncy will be on #Dodgers charter to South Korea. Muncy told me he lost 10 pounds fighting a gnarly virus (Not COVID) in the last week.

The hope is that Muncy is feeling well enough to start both games in the Seoul Series, set to take place from March 20-21. In terms of potential rust, Muncy will have the opportunity to play in two exhibition games leading into the regular season starting.

In nine Cactus League games, he batted .357/.545/.786 with two home runs, four RBI and four walks.

How important is Max Muncy for Dodgers lineup?

Defensively, there are some questions about Muncy at third base, but it’s an area he took a vested approach to improving upon during the offseason.

Using a smaller glove, Muncy worked on the details that could help him further eliminate minor miscues that have plagued him in the past. His throwing has been much-improved as well.

The offensive end is where Muncy is a key piece. Since taking over as a full-time player in 2018, Muncy has 175 home runs, 472 RBI, 471 runs scored and a 128 wRC+. His .356 on-base percentage is a clear indication he has an ability to work counts, while forcing pitchers to avoid mistake pitches.

Settling into a run-producing spot in the Dodgers lineup, Muncy projects to again have a stellar season. His 105 RBI in 2023 were a career high, and he’ll have another shot to elevate that mark this year.
