Marlins Vs. Dodgers Game Preview: Caleb Ferguson Opening Doubleheader

After having their season-best winning streak snapped at 11 games, the Los Angeles Dodgers continue their series against the Miami Marlins at Dodger Stadium.

The teams are playing a split doubleheader on Saturday due to the series finale being rescheduled because of Hurricane Hilary.

Caleb Ferguson starts as the opener in the first game, a role he last filled against the Philadelphia Phillies on June 11. The left-hander enters play at 7-3 with a 2.38 ERA, 3.29 FIP, 1.39 WHIP and 10.5 strikeouts per nine in 45.1 innings pitched this season (51 games; one start).

Prior to first pitch, the Dodgers recalled Ryan Pepiot from Triple-A Oklahoma City as the 27th man for the doubleheader. He is expected to follow Ferguson as the bulk pitcher.

Pepiot has missed the entire 2023 season to this point because of a left oblique strain he sustained in his final tuneup of Spring Training. If not for that, the right-hander would have been part of the Dodgers’ Opening Day rotation.

Pepiot went 0-2 with a 3.97 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 10.3 strikeouts per nine in 22.2 innings pitched across six starts for OKC. He was named the Pacific Coast League (PCL) Pitcher of the Week for August 7-13 after allowing just two runs in 10.2 innings during the span.

Also before the game, the Dodgers placed Tony Gonsolin on the 15-day injured list due to right forearm inflammation and recalled Bryan Hudson. Manager Dave Roberts said he does not anticipate Gonsolin returning during the 2023 season.

The Marlins counter with Eury Pérez, who looks to build on what has been an impressive rookie season. He brings with him into his start a 5-4 record, 3.19 ERA, 4.12 FIP, 1.15 WHIP and 10.6 strikeouts per nine in 62 innings pitched (13 games).

The Dodgers hoped Jason Heyward would be in the lineup for the afternoon matchup but he is dealing with soreness in his glute/hip/hamstring after making a sliding catch on Friday.
