Luis Gil: Dodgers Criticizing Yankees For World Series Play Is ‘Part Of Baseball’

In the time following the Los Angeles Dodgers’ World Series win over the New York Yankees, some talk about the disparities in play style have come up.

The main chatter came about during an episode of the “On Base With Mookie Betts” podcast, when a number of Dodgers teammates joined together to talk over their championship season. They lent credit to some of their opponents, while also peeling back the curtain in how they viewed the Yankees.

Using more direct terms for the Yankees’ collapse in Game 5 of the World Series, Dodgers players highlighted the miscues that led to their comeback in the clinching win.

In an appearance on “Foul Territory,” Yankees starter Luis Gil expressed an understanding of critical statements made by several Dodgers:

“That’s just part of baseball. There’s still a lot of baseball to play ahead of them. It’s just one year. There’s many years to come.”

Gil started Game 4 of the World Series, which turned out to be the Yankees’ lone win.

The Dodgers capitalized on sloppy play from the Yankees, and how some reported insights with scouting revealed some weak spots that could be exploited. Proving that information accurate in hindsight, Los Angeles pushed the envelope, taking advantage of as much as they could.

How did Dodgers exploit the Yankees?

The main areas that the Dodgers went after was simply playing smart, adding on a fair amount of aggressiveness. Perfect examples was running out the bases, which Mookie Betts did in the infamous play when Gerrit Cole failed to cover first in the fifth inning of Game 5.

Earlier in that frame, Kiké Hernández took a wide angle on a slide into third base, forcing a tough play that loaded the bases. In a nutshell, the Dodgers played their best brand of baseball, while the Yankees provided them with additional outs.
