The Los Angeles Dodgers made their trade for Tyler Glasnow and Manuel Margot official on Saturday, sending Ryan Pepiot and Jonny DeLuca to the Tampa Bay Rays in return.

As part of the deal, the Dodgers also signed Glasnow to a five-year contract extension worth $136.5 million. Although Glasnow was already under contract for the 2024 season for a total of $25 million, the deal begins this upcoming season, so the contract essentially adds four-years and $111.5 million for the right-hander, taking him through the 2027 season.

It’s also been reported Glasnow has a team option in his new contract extension for $30 million in 2028, which becomes a player option worth $20 million if the Dodgers decline it.

The deal is not without risk as Glasnow has been limited in previous seasons due to injuries, but when he is on the mound, the upside is tremendous. On an innings-by-innings basis, Glasnow is arguably a top-five pitcher in baseball.

Since 2019, his first full seasons with the Rays, Glasnow is second in strikeouts per nine (12.5), third in batting average against (.194) and second in FIP (2.89). In six seasons Tampa Bay, he went 27-16 with a 3.20 ERA and 526 strikeouts in 388.1 innings.

The 30-year-old went 10-7 with a 3.53 ERA, allowing 47 runs in 120 innings with 162 strikeouts in a career-best 21 starts in 2023. He finished with career-highs in wins, starts, strikeouts, strikeouts per 9 (12.2) and innings pitched.

He has been in the Major Leagues parts of eight seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates (2016-2018) and Tampa Bay (2018-2023), and is a combined 30-27 with a 3.89 ERA over 529.2 innings.

The Southern California native was picked by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the fifth round of the 2011 MLB Draft out of William S. Hart High School.

Shohei Ohtani helped recruit Tyler Glasnow

As the Dodgers were working through the details of the trade, Ohtani attempted to recruit Glasnow and promised to hit him some home runs if he joined the team.

Ohtani made it clear during his introductory press conference with the Dodgers that his top priority is winning a World Series, and his recruitment of Glasnow shows his long-term commitment to success.
