Los Angeles Dodgers Claim Ashton Goudeau From San Francisco Giants

The Los Angeles Dodgers claimed Ashton Goudeau off waivers from the San Francisco Giants and have intentions to add him to their 40-man roster, which is currently full. They could transfer a player to the 60-day injured list or designate someone for assignment.

Though, another solution would be if a player was on the IL due to the coronavirus (COVID-19). Such cases do not count toward the number of players on a 40-man roster. A recent report indicated Brusdar Graterol was in the IL due to an issue stemming from COVID-19, but the Dodgers have not confirmed as much.

The Dodgers will need to make room on the 40-man roster for Goudeau, which could either mean placing someone on the 60-day injured list or designating someone for assignment. If a player was on the COVID-19 related injured list, that wouldn’t count against the 40-man roster, and would create the room needed for such a waiver claim. The Dodgers haven’t yet announced the corresponding roster move.

Joe Kelly also began the season on the 10-day IL, but due to right shoulder inflammation. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts reiterated on Friday that Graterol remained ahead of Kelly in their respective recoveries, but a timetable was not in place for either to be activated.

Goudeau made his MLB debut last season with the Colorado Rockies, pitching to a 7.56 ERA in four games. One of those appearances came against the Dodgers, when he allowed three runs on three hits in one inning.

Since spending last season with the Rockies, Goudeau has joined the Pittsburgh Pirates, Baltimore Orioles, Giants and now Dodgers on a series of waiver claims.

The right-hander is a lifetime 29-48 with a 4.81 ERA and 499 strikeouts over eight Minor League seasons. He was originally selected by the Kansas City Royals in the 27th round of the 2012 Draft out of Maple Woods Community College.

Roberts confident in closer options

Rather than use Kenley Jansen for a third time in the past four days, Roberts called on Corey Knebel to convert a save in the series opener against the Washington Nationals. Roberts stressed the decision was made with usage in mind and voiced confidence in Jansen, Knebel and Blake Treinen to close games.
