The Los Angeles Dodgers have officially re-signed outfielder Teoscar Hernández, solidifying their outfield for the foreseeable future. On January 3, 2025, the team announced a three-year, $66 million contract with Hernández, which includes a $23 million signing bonus and a club option for a fourth year in 2028 valued at $15 million. This deal comes after Hernández’s stellar performance in the 2024 season, where he played a pivotal role in the Dodgers’ World Series victory.

Details and Financial Implications

Hernández’s new contract is structured with financial flexibility in mind. The deal includes $23.5 million in deferred money, which helps the Dodgers manage their payroll. The salary breakdown is as follows:

  • 2025: $10 million ($7.5 million deferred)
  • 2026: $12 million ($8 million deferred)
  • 2027: $14.5 million ($8 million deferred)

If the Dodgers decline the 2028 option, they will owe Hernández a $6.5 million buyout. This structure allows the team to maintain financial flexibility while securing a key player for their championship aspirations.

Hernández’s Impact and 2024 Performance

In the 2024 season, Hernández proved to be an invaluable asset for the Dodgers. He posted impressive numbers, slashing .272/.339/.501 with 32 doubles, 33 home runs, and 99 RBIs. His performance earned him his third Silver Slugger Award and a second selection to the All-MLB Team. Hernández’s contributions extended beyond the regular season, as he played a crucial role in the Dodgers’ postseason success, culminating in their World Series triumph over the New York Yankees.

Dodgers’ Championship Odds for 2025

With Hernández back in the fold, the Dodgers have further solidified their status as favorites for the 2025 season. Current odds at BetRivers reflect the team’s strong position:

  • World Series: +400 (implied 20% chance of victory)
  • National League Pennant: +250 (implied 28.57% chance)

These odds underscore the Dodgers’ position as the team to beat in the upcoming season, with oddsmakers giving them the best chance to repeat as champions.

Outfield Configuration and Team Dynamics

Hernández’s return ensures that the Dodgers’ outfield remains one of the most formidable in the league. With Mookie Betts likely spending more time in the infield, Hernández is expected to take on an expanded role in left field. This move provides the Dodgers with offensive firepower and defensive stability, crucial for their title defense.

Market Competition and Hernández’s Decision

Despite interest from other teams, including a reported two-year offer from the New York Mets, Hernández chose to remain with the Dodgers. His decision was influenced by the team’s winning culture and his desire to compete for more championships. Hernández reportedly left money on the table, passing up offers worth $5 to $6 million more from other teams, emphasizing that his priority was to stay with the Dodgers.

The Dodgers’ Pursuit of Roki Sasaki

As the Dodgers celebrate securing Hernández, their attention has also been focused on another potential addition to their star-studded roster: Japanese pitching phenom Roki Sasaki. The 23-year-old right-hander has been a significant priority for the Dodgers, with president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman expressing strong interest in bringing Sasaki to Los Angeles.

Sasaki, known for his triple-digit fastball and devastating splitter, has been among the most sought-after international prospects. The Dodgers’ pursuit of Sasaki aligns with their strategy of building a rotation that could potentially feature multiple Japanese pitching stars, including Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto.

The addition of Sasaki would further cement the Dodgers’ status as a powerhouse and preferred destination for top international talent. With a potential signing bonus of $6.5 million reported, the Dodgers are positioning themselves to add yet another elite arm to their already formidable pitching staff.

The Dodgers have emerged as firm favorites to land the young star. If they sign Sasaki, it would mark another significant coup for the organization, further strengthening their roster and solidifying their position as World Series favorites for years to come.
