Longtime Scout Tom Myers Leaves Cubs For Role With Dodgers

The Los Angeles Dodgers face the possibility of significant roster turnover this offseason, but the same can’t be said for other areas of the organization.

President of baseball operations Andrew Friedman recently said he expects the entire coaching staff will return under manager Dave Roberts next year. The front office also will have some continuity as several executives reportedly turned down opportunities to interview with other teams.

While subtractions appear unlikely at this point, the Dodgers never leave a stone unturned and are always looking to strengthen their staffs.

According to Patrick Mooney of The Athletic, longtime Chicago Cubs scout Tom Myers has left the organization for a similar role with L.A.:

Tom Myers, a longtime scout for the Cubs in Southern California, left the organization to join the Dodgers. Myers, who once managed Kyle Hendricks in the Cape Cod League, will be an area scout for the Dodgers with some cross-checking duties and crossover into player development.

Myers had served as an area scout supervisor for the Cubs in Southern California since October 2011. His responsibilities included assisting the organization with identifying and evaluating talent in the MLB Draft each year.

Before his decade-long stint with the Cubs, Myers was an assistant coach for the University of California, Santa Barbara, and Santa Clara University.

The 52-year-old was selected by the Oakland Athletics in the 39th round of the 1991 MLB Draft and pitched over parts of four Minor League seasons before retiring as a player.

Roenicke scouted for Dodgers during postseason

Myers joins a Dodgers’ scouting department that also includes former MLB manager Ron Roenicke. He returned to the organization earlier this year and was on hand to scout the Houston Astros at Minute Maid Park during the postseason for a potential World Series matchup.

Roenicke spent parts of the first three seasons of his playing career with L.A. before rejoining the club as a coach in 1992. He held various coaching roles at both the Major League and Minor League levels until departing the organization in 1999.

Roenicke more recently served as the Dodgers third base coach for part of the 2015 season.
