The Los Angeles Dodgers’ comeback attempt fell just short on Tuesday night, but it wasn’t without Freddie Freeman continuing to torment the Miami Marlins.
The 35-year-old hit his eighth home run of the season in the top of the sixth inning, which at the time gave the Dodgers a 3-2 lead. The blast was Freeman’s 42nd against the Marlins, breaking a tie with Ryan Howard and Ryan Zimmerman for the most by a single player facing the franchise.
Freeman is aware of his sustained success against the Marlins, but doesn’t know the reason for it, via Bill Plunkett of the Southern California News Group:
“I don’t know the exact numbers, but I guess I’ve hit a few home runs against them in my career,” Freeman said.
“It’s just I’ve played a long time against the Marlins. I’ve played a long time in this league. I don’t know what it is. I don’t have an answer for it. I guess I just play good at the right time, or I’ve just played a lot.”
Freeman has played in 215 career games against the Marlins and is batting .321/.409/.552 with 49 doubles, four triples, 42 home runs and 136 RBI.
The eight-time All-Star has had plenty of opportunities against Miami due to spending the first 12 seasons of his career with the Atlanta Braves, who also play in the National League East.
Freeman hit 38 of his 42 career home runs against the Marlins as a member of the Braves. He didn’t hit his first home run against them with the Dodgers until the 2024 season, but already has three this season.
Freeman had another strong game to close out the series on Wednesday, tripling and driving in four runs during a 3-for-4 day. However, he did not add another long-ball to his record.
Freddie Freeman getting day off on road trip?
The Dodgers are in the middle of a 10-game road trip without an off day, and manager Dave Roberts previously suggested that Freeman could get some rest against the Marlins.
“We’ll see,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said of Freeman potentially getting a day off before the road trip began.
“I know he expects to, which is a good thing. I do expect him to play three in Atlanta, and then I do expect him to play four in Arizona. We’ll figure out those middle games.”
However, he has started in all six games so far. Freeman is not the type of player who wants a day off, so it’s likely he has pushed back against Roberts’ suggestions.
