Family Sues Dodgers Claiming They Were ‘Racially Profiled & Treated With Excessive Force’ By Dodger Stadium Security

The Los Angeles Dodgers have made their home at Dodger Stadium since 1962, and it traditionally been one of the nicest places to take in a Major League Baseball game.

That will continue to be the case in the future as the organization spent hundreds of millions of dollars to complete a stadium renovation during the past offseason in preparation for the 2020 MLB All-Star Game.

Of course, that likely will not take place due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Furthermore, fans may need to wait until next season to enjoy new Dodger Stadium amenities as there currently are not plans to permit any in attendance for games this year.

As nice as Dodger Stadium is, there have been a few issues with crime and violence either in the stadium or its parking lot. It appears there was another issue during the postseason in 2019 as according to Alden Gonzalez of ESPN, a family is suing the Dodgers because of how they were treated by the stadium security staff:

A family of Los Angeles Dodgers fans is seeking $17 million in damages over claims that they were racially profiled and treated with excessive force by the team’s security personnel during a game last October.

The suit, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court on Thursday, stems from an incident that took place after the Dodgers’ season-ending loss to the Washington Nationals in Game 5 of last year’s National League Division Series. It claims that seven members of the Verdin family were called “gang bangers” and “thugs” while being “accosted, assaulted and battered” by Dodgers security employees despite being innocent bystanders near another fan “acting erratically, pushing and yelling at plaintiffs and their family members.”

The job of stadium security staffs are never easy considering how many people they have to look over, although racial profiling and excessive force are obviously never OK. The family must find a way to prove their claims took place, which will be difficult to do in court.

This lawsuit represents the fourth civil suit filed by attorney Peter diDonato against Dodger Stadium security in the past 14 months, with the three others still pending litigation.
