Elton John joined the exclusive EGOT club on Monday night after winning the Emmy for his “Elton John Live: Farewell From Dodger Stadium” streaming special on Disney+.

That made John the 19th person in entertainment history to win an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Award, which respectively honor outstanding achievements in television, recording, film and Broadway theatre. Six others have also received EGOT recognition, although at least one was bestowed for an honorary or similar non-competitive distinction.

The EGOT is referred to as the grand slam of American show business, and although the first person to earn the achievement was Richard Rodgers in 1962, the acronym was not created until the mid 1980s.

The last three years have now seen a new EGOT member added with Jennifer Hudson earning the honor in 2022 and Viola Davis joining in 2023.

John’s legendary performance at Dodger Stadium 49 years ago launched his career and helped make him one of the most famous musicians in the world. At 75 years old, he played his final tour, “Farewell Yellow Brick Road,” which concluded the North America portion of the schedule with three consecutive dates at Dodger Stadium.

More than 50,000 fans showed up to Chavez Ravine each night to support him, with many of them wearing sparkling items and bright colors, just as The Rocket Man has done throughout his career.

John’s final North American show was live-streamed globally on Disney+. “Elton John Live: Farewell from Dodger Stadium” was a once-in-a-lifetime live, global concert event that offered fans from around the world a front-row seat to witness the groundbreaking magic of the Rocket Man back at Dodger Stadium.

The streaming platform also debuted the documentary, “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road: The Final Elton John Performances and the Years That Made His Legend,” from Academy Award nominee R.J. Cutler and filmmaker David Furnish.

Dodgers owners present donation to Elton John AIDS Foundation

During the final show, Los Angeles Dodgers co-owners Mark Walter and Billie Jean King joined John on stage at Dodger Stadium to present him with a $1 million donation on behalf of the team.

“Beyond the obvious impact and joy of his music, Elton has been a social leader in fostering LGBTQ acceptance and equality and has worked tirelessly to improve the lives of those living with HIV and AIDS through the Elton John AIDS Foundation,” Walter said.

“We at the Dodgers share Elton’s commitment to community, equality and service and are pleased to be able to support the work of the foundation. Billie Jean and I thank Elton for all he has achieved and congratulate him on his iconic career.”
