Dodgers Vs. Yankees Game Preview: Road Trip Ending With Chance For Series Sweep

The Los Angeles Dodgers began their road trip with consecutive losses to the Pittsburgh Pirates, but they’ve rebounded to win three games in a row and are in position to complete a series sweep of the New York Yankees.

The series finale at Yankee Stadium is being played in front of a national audience as part of “Sunday Night Baseball” on ESPN. Alex Verdugo and Teoscar Hernández are going to be mic’d up for a portion of the broadcast.

Through 21 matchups during the regular season since Interleague play began in 1997, the Dodgers are 11-10 against the Yankees and 5-2 at Yankee Stadium. A victory on Sunday would give the Dodgers their first sweep of the Yankees since the 1963 World Series.

Up to this point the Dodgers have never swept the Yankees during the regular season.

To do so they’ll need to reverse a recent trend in Tyler Glasnow starts. The Dodgers haven’t scored a run while Glasnow has still been in the game over his last five outings, during which time he’s gone 0-3 with a 3.30 ERA.

The right-hander has been stellar in his first season with the Dodgers thus far, going 6-4 with a 2.93 ERA and 0.90 WHIP in 14 starts. Glasnow leads the Majors with 104 strikeouts, ranks second in second in opponents’ batting average (.171) and third in WHIP.

In his career against the Yankees, Glasnow is 4-2 with a 2.74 ERA in nine starts. Included in that is a 3-0 record and 2.05 ERA in five outings at Yankee Stadium.

Glasnow additionally is 4-0 with a 1.45 ERA and .113 opponents’ batting average in his last five starts against the Yankees.

He’s opposed by Luis Gil, who has impressed in his first extended opportunity at the Major League level. Gil made his MLB debut with the Yankees during the 2021 season in the form of six starts. He then made one start in 2022 before undergoing Tommy John surgery that limited Gil to two outings on a rehab assignment last year.

The 26-year-old is 8-1 with a 1.82 ERA and 0.92 WHIP across 12 starts this season. Gil faces a Dodgers lineup that is led by former MVP winners Mookie Betts, Shohei Ohtani and Freddie Freeman.

But it’s been Hernández who has done the bulk of the damage throughout the weekend.

Meanwhile, the Yankees are without Juan Soto in their lineup for a third consecutive game. It’s possible, but not likely, that Soto appears off the bench as a pinch-hitter.
