The Los Angeles Dodgers took a second consecutive game against the St. Louis Cardinals and now are in position to earn a series win with another victory on Wednesday.

Recently recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City, Mitch White makes his fourth start and 19th overall big league appearance of the season. He was supposed to serve as the bulk pitcher on Tuesday, but the Dodgers went in another direction as Evan Phillips followed Corey Knebel.

“We had some options, obviously, with our roster, and we just felt we can start him [Wednesday],” manager Dave Roberts said of the team’s thought process in starting White. “That’s kind of how it played out.

“Just kind of a last-minute decision, talking through how we’re going to navigate this game and needing length [Wednesday]. To win this game and use various arms, we just felt it was the best way to go.”

White owns a 1-2 record with a 3.49 ERA, 4.05 FIP and 1.29 WHIP in 38.2 innings pitched this year. He has fared even better in the Minors, going 3-0 with a 2.02 ERA and 1.09 WHIP across 35.2 innings (10 games, seven starts).

White tossed a 1-2-3 inning in his only appearance against the Cardinals in June.

St. Louis counters with longtime ace Adam Wainwright, who arguably is in the midst of his best season since earning his last All-Star nod in 2014.

The 40-year-old brings with him into his start a 14-7 record, 2.91 ERA, 3.50 FIP and 1.03 WHIP in 176 innings pitched (27 games). He is on a personal three-game winning streak, allowing just two runs (one earned) over his last 21.1 innings of work.

In his career against the Dodgers, Wainwright is 6-5 with a 2.51 ERA and 1.18 WHIP over 89.2 frames (16 games, 13 starts).
