On a busy day back in January, the Los Angeles Dodgers completed two trades that involved players on the fringe of the organization’s 40-man roster. First, right-handed pitcher Joe Wieland was traded to the Seattle Mariners in exchange for Minor League infielder Erick Mejia.

Shortly after that trade was made official, the Dodgers sent left-hander Tyler Olson and infielder Ronald Torreyes to the New York Yankees, receiving infielder/outfielder Rob Segedin and a player to be named later or cash considerations in return.

Less than two weeks after joining the Dodgers organization, Segedin was part of the initial group of 20 players who received a non-roster invite to big league camp.

The 27 year old replaced Scott Van Slyke at first base in the seventh inning of Thursday’s game against the Chicago White Sox and hit an RBI double in his first at-bat.

Segedin pinch-hit on Friday, but struck out and left two men on base in his lone at-bat. He was again utilized as a pinch-hitter on Saturday and made the most of his opportunity.

With the Dodgers leading the Arizona Diamondbacks, 3-2, in the bottom of the sixth inning, Segedin lined a two-run homer over the left field fence:

Then in the eighth, Segedin padded the Dodgers’ lead by crushing his second home run of the game:

Segedin split time last season with Double-A Trenton and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He hit a combined .287/.360/.426 with seven home runs, 12 doubles and 34 RBIs.

Of Segedin’s 71 games played, 46 were at the Triple-A level, which is where he began 2015. He hit .278/.350/.414 during that time, and .303/.379/.449 in Double-A.

Segedin played first base, third base and left field last season. A third-round pick by the Yankees in the 2010 draft, he’s yet to make his Major League debut.
