The New York Mets took a 1-0 lead two pitches into the game, and Cody Bellinger failed to hit a home run, but it was ultimately more of the same for the Los Angeles Dodgers in what turned into another rout.
Mets rookie Tyler Pill held a no-hitter through three innings, though a leadoff walk and throwing error allowed the Dodgers to tie the game on Rich Hill’s sacrifice fly. Cody Bellinger’s hustle double to lead off the fourth was the Dodgers’ first hit.
Logan Forsythe followed with an RBI double, and after Joc Pederson was intentionally walked, Yasiel Puig clobbered a 3-1 fastball for a three-run home run.
Puig admired the home run before breaking into his trot around the bases. While slightly exaggerated, it was hardly his most egregious celebration.
Mets first baseman Wilmer Flores took exception to it and exchanged words with Puig. Flores and Jay Bruce both voiced their dissatisfaction with Puig’s actions following the game.
Yasmani Grandal extended the Dodgers’ lead with solo home runs in the sixth and eighth innings. It gave Grandal three home runs in two games against the Mets, and nine overall this season.
The Dodgers enter play Thursday holding a half-game lead over the Colorado Rockies in the National League West standings, and in position to complete a four-game sweep of the Mets. Doing so would mean a season-best seven-game winning streak for Los Angeles.
