Dodgers Video: Yasmani Grandal Hits Key RBI Double, Alex Wood Shuts Out Diamondbacks

The Los Angeles Dodgers received another quality start from Alex Wood, who turned in seven shutout innings against the Arizona Diamondbacks. He was backed by Pedro Baez and Kenley Jansen, who combined for two scoreless innings out of the bullpen.

Wood lowered his ERA to 1.67, which would lead the Majors if he had six more innings to his name up to this point in the season. He finished the night with 10 strikeouts in what was a third start this season with double-digit strikeouts.

Wood improved to 10-0 and became the first Dodgers pitcher to begin the season with such a record since reliever Ed Roebuck in 1962. Don Newcombe in 1955 was the last Dodgers starter to reach that mark.

While Wood received plenty of deserved praise, the Dodgers would not have won if Yasmani Grandal didn’t deliver an RBI double in the second inning. To Chris Taylor’s credit, he got a good read and jump on the ball and scored from first base after reaching on a single.

The double was Grandal’s second in as many games against the Diamondbacks. He went 3-for-4 with two RBI in the series opener. Grandal enters play Thursday with 18 doubles, which is just one shy from matching a career high that was set in 2014.

With their win, the Dodgers extended their lead over the Diamondbacks in the National League West standings to 4.5 games.
