Dodgers Video: First ‘Neighborhood Play’ Overturned Under New Replay Rules

The Los Angeles Dodgers looked to add to their three-game winning streak and run of 27 scoreless innings on Thursday as they faced the San Francisco Giants in the opener of a four-game series at AT&T Park.

Coinciding with their scoreless streak, Los Angeles had outscored their opponent 25-0 through three games. However, they figured to face a formidable challenge in a Giants team that was fresh off taking two of three from the Milwaukee Brewers.

As they’d done in each game this season, the Dodgers once again jumped out to a lead. With one out in the second inning, Adrian Gonzalez on third base and Joc Pederson on first, Kiké Hernandez slapped an RBI single to right field.

Austin Barnes followed with a base hit to left, and Jake Peavy faced a bases-loaded jam. Peavy did catch a break as Alex Wood stepped into the batter’s box after Barnes’ single. Wood grounded into what appeared to be an inning-ending double play.

However, under Major League Baseball’s new rules, the Dodgers were able to challenge the ‘neighborhood play’ at second base. Replay showed Joe Panik stepped off the bag early, nullifying the double play, and scoring another run for the Dodgers:

The overturned call made little difference as the Giants went on to forge a comeback, with their 12-6 win snapping the Dodgers’ scoreless and winning streaks.
