Los Angeles Dodgers rookie Cody Bellinger has taken the world by storm this season, leading the National League in home runs despite not being called up until April 25.
Bellinger was named NL Player of the Week for June 19-25 as he hit .370/.400/1.037 with three doubles, five home runs and 12 RBI in seven games. Overall on the season, he’s batting .274/.342/.679 with 13 doubles, one triple, 24 home runs and 55 RBI.
While Bellinger’s offensive production to this point has been record-breaking, he has also impressed in the field. In addition to playing his natural first base position, Bellinger has also shown versatility by playing the outfield.
On Sunday, Bellinger made his first start in right field since last playing the position for Double-A Tulsa last season.
If there were any questions whether he could handle that on a Major League level, the 21-year-old eased those concerns. With the Dodgers trailing 6-4 in the seventh inning, the Rockies had two runners on with two outs.
Rockies shortstop Pat Valaika lined a ball to right-center field that Bellinger tracked down to make a diving catch.
The play proved to be a big one as the Dodgers were able to erase the deficit, scoring five runs on four wild pitches by Rockies reliever Adam Ottavino.
Bellinger added a home run in the eighth inning, his second of the day, to complete the 12-6 comeback victory. He broke the MLB record with six multi-homer games in 57 games on the season, which beat Mark McGwire’s record of 97 games.
