Dodgers Updates: Max Muncy & Tommy Edman Starting Rehab Assignments

The Los Angeles Dodgers have a lot of offensive talent currently out because of injury, but that could soon change with Max Muncy and Tommy Edman beginning to inch closer to their respective returns.

The Dodgers’ offense has fallen into a bit of a rut for prolonged stretches since Mookie Betts was placed on the 10-day injured list in mid-July. After scoring the sixth-most runs among all teams in June, the Dodgers struggled to maintain the same production and fell all the way to 19th in July.

The good news for L.A. is that help could soon be on the way as manager Dave Roberts announced Muncy and Edman are starting rehab assignments this weekend with Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Prior to both players joining the Dodgers’ top Minor League affiliate, Muncy and Edman are going to be among those who participate in a simulated game at Dodger Stadium on Thursday.

The incorporation of Muncy and Edman into the lineup, along with Betts, will provide a sizable boost for a Dodgers offense that has not been at full strength for quite some time.

Despite the recent trouble scoring runs, the Dodgers’ offense still remains a top-five unit in all of baseball over the course of the season. When fully healthy, the lineup has a chance to be better than it was earlier this season with the additions of Amed Rosario, Edman, Muncy’s return and the recent resurgence of Gavin Lux.

On paper, the Dodgers could put together a lineup that is deeper and more balanced than any combination they previously had available this season. It still remains to be seen how Muncy will look at the plate after what could likely be a three-month absence, as well as Edman who has missed the entire 2024 season up to this point.

How Max Muncy improved

For multiple weeks, Muncy was slowed in his recovery from a right oblique strain because of lingering pain and discomfort whenever swinging a bat.

He and the Dodgers remained at a loss over what was causing that, and it wasn’t until a recent trip to a chiropractor that Muncy experienced a stunning turn of events.
