Dodgers Updates: Kiké Hernández Delayed, Blake Treinen Nearing Return & Michael Kopech Encouraged

The Los Angeles Dodgers began to absorb multiple injuries to their group of position players in the final weeks leading up to the All-Star break, beginning with Max Muncy suffering a bone bruise in his left knee.

Days later, Tommy Edman sustained a fractured right pinky toe as a result of being hit by a pitch, and Teoscar Hernández sustained a bone bruise on his left foot after fouling a pitch off. The Dodgers then placed Kiké Hernández on the 10-day injured list on July 7 due to left elbow inflammation.

He joined the likes of Tony Gonsolin, Michael Kopech, Roki Sasaki, Blake Snell and Blake Treinen, among others, on the Dodgers’ injured list.

Dodgers updates

Blake Treinen

Treinen began a rehab assignment on July 9 and has made four appearances thus far. The most recent of which came Friday night with Triple-A Oklahoma City.

“I think he’s going to throw on Sunday, so that’s two out of three (days), and he’ll probably get two or three days off, and then hope to mix in a back-to-back and then after that hopefully be ready to come to us,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said.

That rough timeline would have Treinen potentially returning to the Dodgers bullpen during their road trip at the end of July.

Kiké Hernández

Roberts initially estimated Hernández would possibly return shortly after the All-Star break, however that that no longer appears to be the case. Hernández did some light throwing on Saturday but otherwise is yet to make much progress.

“He’s not doing any kind of baseball activities. I don’t know a timeline, I don’t think Kiké knows a timeline,” Roberts said.

“I think the time he’s going to be down, not doing baseball stuff, there’s a buildup to get him back to playing with us, which would obviously mean a rehab assignment. I just don’t know a timeline so we’re sort of in a holding pattern until he gets pain-free.”

Michael Kopech

Kopech played catch before Saturday’s game, which marked his first time doing so on the field since having right knee surgery for a torn meniscus.

Kopech said he’s pitched through knee trouble throughout his career but was confident the procedure was going to be beneficial moving forward. He also didn’t necessarily believe going on the 60-day injured list was necessary, but with that having been the case, the expectation is to be activated once eligible on Wednesday, Aug. 27.
