Dodgers Transfer Edwin Ríos To 60-Day Injured List

The Los Angeles Dodgers transferred Edwin Ríos to the 60-day injured list as one of the corresponding moves to selecting the contract of Stefen Romero. Hanser Alberto going on paternity created an opportunity for Romero to join the Dodgers’ active roster.

Alberto must miss at least Wednesday’s game but is only permitted to be away from the team for a maximum of three days.

Meanwhile, the paper move with Ríos doesn’t have much impact on his timeline to return from what Dodgers manager Dave Roberts deemed a “Grade 3 or Grade 4” right hamstring strain. The Dodgers placed Ríos on the 10-day IL on June 3.

“Lower hamstring, part of the tendon or the muscle came off the bone,” Roberts added. “So it’s not the belly of the hamstring. It is not going to require surgery, but it’s going to be a handful of weeks until we even consider having him back.”

Ríos is now among nine players the Dodgers have put on the 60-day IL this season. The group also includes Walker Buehler, Danny Duffy, Victor González, Tommy Kahnle, Dustin May, Jimmy Nelson, Blake Treinen and Kevin Pillar.

Each is expected to return at some point this season, with Pillar potentially being the lone exception. The veteran outfielder expressed optimism of playing again in 2022, but Roberts opined the surgery he underwent for a fractured left shoulder “for all intents and purposes is the end of the season for him.”

Ríos wanted bounce-back season

After struggling to begin last year before undergoing season-ending surgery for a torn labrum in his right shoulder, Ríos vowed to have a productive 2022 campaign. A strong showing in Spring Training led to earning a spot on the Dodgers’ Opening Day roster.

He initially impressed in limited opportunities off the bench and continued that success when regular starts became available while Max Muncy was on the injured list. Ríos has hit .244/.293/.500 with seven home runs, a .341 wOBA and 121 wRC+ over 27 games thus far.
