The Arizona Diamondbacks got an early start on trade deadline activity by sending David Peralta to the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday in exchange for catching prospect Christian Cerda.
Peralta, who is in the final year of his current contract, helps bolster the Rays’ outfield depth as they look up at the New York Yankees in the American League East standings. The Diamondbacks traded one of the multiple players who were candidates to jettisoned from their roster as they wind toward the end of another disappointing season.
As the trade deadline approached on Tuesday, Dodgers were linked to a wide range of possibilities, which included having interest in a Peralta trade, according to Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic:
For instance, the Dodgers had shown interest in trading for outfielder David Peralta, a source told The Athletic, though that option was closed off earlier Saturday when Arizona sent Peralta to Tampa Bay for minor league catcher Christian Cerda.
Peralta hit .248/.316/.460 with 19 doubles, 12 home runs, and drove in 41 runs with the Diamondbacks this season. He posted a 110 wRC+ in 310 plate appearances, but in the seven games following the All-Star break, notched eight hits in 19 at-bats, good for a .488 wOBA.
After spending the first eight and a half seasons with the Diamondbacks, Peralta left a last-place team to join the Rays as they fight for positioning in the Wild Card picture.
Dodgers move on from Peralta to Gallo
With Peralta coming off the market over the weekend, and Juan Soto getting traded to the San Diego Padres along with Josh Bell, the Dodgers wound up setting their sights on Joey Gallo.
The struggling slugger was acquired from the New York Yankees in exchange for pitching prospect Clayton Beeter.
