Dodgers Trade Rumors: ‘Big Things’ In Works Before Deadline

Hours after it appeared the Washington Nationals were on the verge of trading Max Scherzer to the San Diego Padres, the Los Angeles Dodgers not only re-entered the picture but expanded talks to include Trea Turner as well.

As reports of Scherzer waiving his no-trade clause surfaced, it was said the Dodgers would send Keibert Ruiz, Josiah Gray, Donovan Casey and Gerardo Carrillo to the Nationals in exchange for Scherzer and Turner.

The trade has not yet been finalized as the final details still need to be ironed out, but the expectation remains the Dodgers will complete the blockbuster prior to the 1 p.m. PT deadline on Friday.

Meanwhile, L.A. is also said to be working on at least one more trade before the deadline, according to Jon Heyman of MLB Network:

Deadline winner heading into the big day today: Dodgers (obvious reasons and they are working on more big things). Deadline loser: Mariners (who traded their beloved and dominant closer, killing the team’s mojo at a time the players had something special going)

— Jon Heyman (@JonHeyman) July 30, 2021

Whatever potential trade(s) the Dodgers could have in the works while potentially impactful, presumably will not quite be of the same caliber as their reported deal with the Nationals.

If taking prior trade speculation into account, it’s possible the Dodgers remain engaged with the Chicago Cubs for Craig Kimbrel, or to acquire closer Ian Kennedy from the Texas Rangers. The Minnesota Twins’ José Berríos appears more likely to wind up with the San Diego Padres or San Francisco Giants.

The Dodgers also could part with Brusdar Graterol, who reportedly has drawn plenty of interest despite having a subpar season thus far. Moving Graterol would be even more likely if the Dodgers were to trade for Kimbrel or Kennedy.

Dodgers complete Duffy trade

Prior to nearing an agreement with the Nationals, the Dodgers officially completed a trade to acquire Danny Duffy and cash considerations from the Kansas City Royals in exchange for a player to be named later.

DJ Peters was designated for assignment in order to add Duffy to the 40-man roster.
