Dodgers Spring Training: Tony Gonsolin Missing Next Start Due To Left Ankle Sprain

The Los Angeles Dodgers starting rotation for the regular season is largely set, and it includes Tony Gonsolin as he looks to build on last year’s All-Star campaign.

Although Gonsolin put together a career-best season, it included a right forearm injury that interrupted his second half. Gonsolin returned in time for the postseason but remained limited during his only start in the National League Division Series.

Gonsolin nonetheless declared he was healthy come October and used the offseason to further prepare his body for the rigors of a season.

However, now Gonsolin is dealing with a lower-body injury. According to Doug Padilla of the Southern California News Group, he suffered a sprained left ankle during a workout at Camelback Ranch:

Gonsolin not making his scheduled start Wednesday night against the Seattle Mariners is going to require to adjust their pitching plans, but that is not much of a challenge with the surplus of pitchers in camp.

It’s unclear when Gonsolin will return to the mound, but it stands to reason that likely will not come before the weekend.

He allowed three hits over 2.1 scoreless innings against the Los Angeles Angels last week.

Tony Gonsolin concerned about MLB pitch clock

Gonsolin’s start at Tempe Diablo Stadium was his first foray with the pitch timer, which came with a period of adjusting.

“I felt really fast at the beginning,” Gonsolin said. “I felt like I was looking at the clock a lot and then later in the inning and the second inning and third, I felt like every time I looked, I had plenty of time. So I tried not to think about it so I could really slow down.

“I don’t like it right now, but this is my first outing so it’s kind of new. It’s just something we’ve got to get over and adapt.”
