Dodgers Spring Training Roster Cuts: Garrett Cleavinger Among 7 Sent To Minor League Camp

The Los Angeles Dodgers made a second round of Spring Training roster cuts on Tuesday morning, which most notably included Garrett Cleavinger getting optioned. James Pazos, Nick Robertson, Mike Kickham, Tim Federowicz, Matt Davidson and Rangel Ravelo were also re-assigned to Minor League camp.

The Dodgers acquired Cleavinger in December, from the Philadelphia Phillies as part of a three-team trade that also involved the Tampa Bay Rays. He was touted as potentially being a second lefty in the bullpen and candidate to fill the void created by Caleb Ferguson requiring Tommy John surgery.

However, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts recently indicated the team was open to — but not set on — carrying two southpaws in the bullpen come Opening Day. Even with Cleavinger seemingly out of the equation, that could wind up being the case if David Price is moved to the bullpen.

Meanwhile, Davidson getting sent to Minor League camp effectively rules out his potential of making the active roster as a two-way player. Davidson has thrown multiple bullpen sessions but there hadn’t been an indication he would get to pitch in a Cactus League game.

The Dodgers currently have 38 players remaining in big league camp. Of those, 32 are on the 40-man roster and the other six are non-roster invitees.

Initial Dodgers roster cuts

The first wave of players being sent to the Minors saw pitchers Gerardo Carrillo, Andre Jackson, Edwin Uceta and Alex Vesia, along with outfielders Zach Reks and Luke Raley, and catcher Keibert Ruiz optioned.

The likes of catcher Hunter Feduccia; pitchers Josiah Gray, Bobby Miller, Landon Knack, Michael Grove, Nolan Long, Jose Martinez, Robinson Ortiz, Ryan Pepiot, Gus Varland and Kendall Williams; infielders Jacob Amaya, Michael Busch, Kody Hoese, Miguel Vargas, Devin Mann, Leonel Valera and Omar Estevez; and outfielders James Outman, Andy Pages and Ryan Noda were also re-assigned to Minor League camp.

The difference in the designation is players who are on the 40-man roster get optioned, while those who are not get re-assigned.
