Dodgers Spring Training: ‘Everything Is Good’ With Mookie Betts

The initial Los Angeles Dodgers lineup released Friday morning included Mookie Betts starting in right field and batting leadoff. However, the team provided an updated version shortly after, and Betts was noticeably absent.

That naturally prompted questions and some concern over a potential injury. “Nothing up with Mookie,” Dodgers manager assured before first pitch against the Cleveland Indians.

“We talked later in the morning and just felt it would be best for him to stay at the facility to work on some things. He’ll be back in there on Sunday.”

Betts quietly is batting .357/.500/.429 with one double and three walks through eight Cactus League games thus far. He largely has been overshadowed by Corey Seager, who entered play Friday having hit a home run in each of his past three games.

“It’s status quo. Looks strong,” Roberts said of Betts. “It’s always a thing early in spring where you’re trying to make sure your mechanics and swing is right. In the outfield, body, everything is good so far.”

Betts will have an opportunity to add to his strong showing when the Dodgers host the Kansas City Royals. Betts has played back-to-back days on three separate occasions, and had he remained in the lineup Friday, it would’ve marked the first time this spring playing three straight days.

Dodgers off day

The Dodgers started their Cactus League schedule with 13 consecutive games and now get their first day off Saturday. In some cases teams will ensure pitchers or position players still report to the facility for mandatory work, but L.A. will not require as much.

“Tomorrow is going to be a full off day for players and staff,” Roberts said.
