Dodgers Spring Training: Clayton Kershaw Encouraged By Start Against Brewers, Believes Slider Is Improving

Despite the end result, Los Angeles Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw enjoyed another successful Cactus League start against the Milwaukee Brewers on Monday. The three-time Cy Young Award winner appeared to be in midseason form, striking out seven batters over 3.2 shutout innings.

Kershaw walked just one batter and yielded only two hits during his outing; one of which was a double to left field that turned Matt Kemp around. Furthermore, Kershaw extended his Spring Training scoreless streak to 9.2 innings.

He was scheduled to go four innings but came out due to pitch count. Kershaw, per his usual routine, completed another inning of throwing in the bullpen.

Afterward, Kershaw discussed his overall performance and believes he got stronger as the outing progressed, via Spectrum SportsNet LA:

“The last couple of innings my stuff got a little bit better. It was definitely a step forward from last game. I think I was able to at least repeat a few more pitches this time out. Still some stuff I could do a little better but for the most part the last two innings was encouraging.”

Kershaw was also enthused with his slider, believing it showed better movement against a good portion of the projected Brewers starting lineup than what had previously been seen this year:

“It had a little better break this time, a little more swings-and-misses, which is a good sign. They brought over a lot of guys that will be in their starting lineup, so it’s always good to see how they react to it. So, you know, a step forward.”

In four starts this spring, Kershaw has yet to allow a run while posting a superb 1.03 WHIP. Overall, he’s allowed six hits, walked four and recorded 11 strikeouts.

Kershaw figures to receive two more tune-up outings this before taking the mound for his franchise-record eighth consecutive Opening Day start against the San Francisco Giants on March 29.
