Dodgers News: Alan Trejo Signed After Electing Free Agency

A wide range of Los Angeles Dodgers injuries this season have been compounded by inconsistent production from the depth of their lineup and bench.

Mookie Betts’ fractured left hand has also thrust Miguel Rojas into an everyday role at shortstop, which the veteran has embraced and flourished in. But the Dodgers are remaining mindful, if not cautious, of Rojas’ workload in effort to keep him healthy.

In addition to that factor, some concerns over the physical demands of playing shortstop and Betts’ throwing struggles have created an anticipation of the Dodgers looking to address the position prior to the MLB trade deadline on July 30.

One solution could end up including Alan Trejo, who signed a Minor League contract with the Dodgers and is making his organizational debut with Triple-A Oklahoma City on Tuesday night, per the team’s broadcaster and communications director Alex Freedman:

#Dodgers have signed infielder Alan Trejo to a minor league deal, and he will make his debut with OKC tonight in Las Vegas.

Appeared in 174 games with Colorado over last 4 seasons, including 28 G this year. Can play 2B-SS-3B. Los Angeles native who went to Warren HS in Downey.

Trejo was designated for assignment by the Colorado Rockies on June 28. That was a corresponding roster move to the Rockies selecting the contract of Aaron Schunk from Triple-A Albuquerque.

Trejo rejected a Minor League assignment in favor of becoming a free agent. He’s short of the requisite three years Major League service time that allows such autonomy, but Trejo was able to elect free agency because he previously had been outrighted in his career.

Trejo hit just .143/.182/.143 with one RBI in 28 games for the Rockies this season. He has primarily played second base (88 games; 69 starts) over parts of four seasons with the Rockies, but also has experience at shortstop (40;28) and third base (32;20).

The 28-year-old is a Los Angeles native who attended San Diego State University.

Dodgers shortstop candidates

If the Dodgers continue to canvas the trade market for a shortstop, potential options include Bo Bichette and Paul DeJong. Willy Adames could be moved as well, but the Milwaukee Brewers are in first place in the National League Central.

Milwaukee was in a similar position in 2022 when they traded Josh Hader.
