Dodgers Break Red Sox MLB Record For Most Players On Disabled List In Single Season

In order to clear room for Clayton Kershaw on the 40-man roster the Los Angeles Dodgers recalled Carlos Frias from Triple-A Oklahoma City on Friday, and placed him on the 60-day disabled list. Frias had been on the DL with Oklahoma City since July 14.

He became the Dodgers’ 28th different player put on the disabled list this season, setting a new Major League record. The mark was previously held by the Boston Red Sox from the 2012 season. They finished 69-93 that season and in last place in the American League East.

The Dodgers meanwhile have succeeded in face of adversity, and stormed to the top of the National League West division standings. Los Angeles at one point trailed the San Francisco Giants by eight games.

The Dodgers entered play Friday night with a season-best five-game lead in the division. Though, their loss to the Miami Marlins trimmed the lead to 4.5 games.

Frias missed the first month of the season with an oblique strain. He sported a 3.95 ERA and 32 strikeouts in 43.1 innings over 10 games (six starts) between Oklahoma City and Double-A Tulsa.

Frias’ lone appearance with the Dodgers this season came July 7 when he allowed two hits and had three strikeouts in four scoreless innings of relief against the San Diego Padres. The 26-year-old added to the laundry list of pitchers who have landed on the DL this season.

The Dodgers at one point had a rotation’s worth in Brett Anderson, Scott Kazmir, Clayton Kershaw, Brandon McCarthy and Hyun-Jin Ryu, on the disabled list at the same time.
