Ahead of Tuesday night’s game against the San Diego Padres, the Los Angeles Dodgers selected the contract of Max Muncy and optioned Breyvic Valera to Triple-A Oklahoma City.
Muncy becomes the 39th player on the Dodgers 40-man roster following pitcher Alec Asher being claimed by the Milwaukee Brewers earlier in the day. The 27-year-old Muncy was someone who impressed during Spring Training before going down with an injury.
He hit .286/.333/.571 with a pair of doubles and one triple in 15 Cactus League plate appearances. In 245 career Major League plate appearances with the Oakland Athletics during the 2015 and 2016 seasons, Muncy hit .190/.290/.321 with five home runs and 17 RBI.
He swung the bat well thus far with Oklahoma City, hitting .313/.421/.563 with two home runs and four RBI in nine games. He can play both of the corner infield positions as well as the outfield.
Valera’s stint with the Dodgers did not last long, as he was only with the team for two games. He made two pinch-hit plate appearances, going 0-for-1 with a walk.
With Logan Forsythe currently on the disabled list, it is possible that Muncy sees some time at third base, although he will more likely just be a bat off the bench for Dodgers manager Dave Roberts.
