Earlier this month the Los Angeles Dodgers re-signed Jimmy Nelson to a one-year contract with a team option for the 2023 season. The right-hander had already been in camp at Camelback Ranch prior to his deal being made official.

Nelson has since been transferred to the 60-day injured list in order to clear a spot on the Dodgers’ 40-man roster for the signing of Danny Duffy. The move was a formality as the 32-year-old is expected to miss the entire 2022 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery and a flexor tendon repair last August.

Nelson’s deal is identical to the contract the Dodgers signed Tommy Kahnle to in December 2020 as he was on the mend from Tommy John surgery. Kahnle is expected to contribute this year, but most likely won’t be ready for Opening Day.

According to Greg Beacham of the Associated Press, Nelson’s team option for the 2023 season is worth $1.1 million, and if it’s picked up, he will have a chance to earn more through performance bonuses:

Right-hander Jimmy Nelson gets a $700,000 salary in his one-year contract, which includes a $1.1 million team option for 2023. He can earn $2 million in performance bonuses for each relief outing of less than 3 1/3 innings: $250,000 for 30 and each additional five to 65. Nelson also can earn $4 million based on a system of one point for each start or relief appearance of at least 3 1/3 innings: $250,000 apiece for 10, 12, 14, 16, 18 and 20 points, and $500,00 each for 22, 24, 26, 28 and 30 points.

Nelson first joined the Dodgers after the 2019 season. He had been non-tendered by the Milwaukee Brewers after being limited to just 10 games (three starts) because of the recovery process from a shoulder injury suffered during the 2018 campaign, and subsequent elbow trouble that surfaced upon getting activated.

Nelson was limited in his first Spring Training with the Dodgers and did not pitch at all for the club during the 2020 campaign after undergoing season-ending back surgery in June.

L.A. re-signed Nelson for the 2021 season and he made the Dodgers Opening Day roster, but again struggled to remain healthy. Nelson was nevertheless was effective when on the mound, going 1-2 with a 1.86 ERA and 44 strikeouts over 28 games (one start).

Dodgers sign Tyler Anderson to one-year contract

Among the Dodgers’ series of roster moves earlier this month was signing Tyler Anderson to a one-year contract. Per multiple reports, his deal for the 2022 season is worth $8 million.

Anderson split the 2021 campaign between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Seattle Mariners, making a combined 31 starts and throwing 167 innings while posting a 4.53 ERA, 4.37 FIP, 7.22 strikeouts per nine, 2.05 walks per nine and 2.1 WAR.
