Dodgers Rumors: Focus Lies On Completing J.T. Realmuto Trade With Marlins

While Bryce Harper and Manny Machado have dominated free agency this winter, even with the slow-moving process toward making respective decisions, J.T. Realmuto has largely done the same when it comes to the trade market.

The Miami Marlins initially were hesitant to grant Realmuto’s wish of a trade but ultimately began pursuing potential deals. The Los Angeles Dodgers emerged as one of the many suitors, with most believing they would align on a trade with the Marlins because of fit.

However, Miami’s insistence that Cody Bellinger be included in a package for Realmuto was a non-starter for Los Angeles. Thus, they pivoted and acquired Russell Martin to pair him with Austin Barnes.

The Dodgers nevertheless were again connected to Realmuto after completing their trade with the Toronto Blue Jays. According to Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY Sports, a Realmuto trade is the Dodgers’ focal point:

The #Dodgers still are hoping to make several moves before spring training, but are focusing most of their attention with the #Marlins in hopes of acquiring All-Star catcher J.T. Realmuto.

A previous report suggested top catching prospect Keibert Ruiz was being mentioned in trade talks with the Marlins. He’s one of the options the Dodgers were thought to be seeking a bridge to, hence acquiring Martin who is entering the final year of his contract.

Realmuto is under team control via salary arbitration through the 2020 season. And despite a willingness to trade their All-Star catcher, the Marlins are said to be comfortable beginning Spring Training with him still part of the organization.
