Dodgers Rumors: Edwin Uceta Going On Restricted List For Violating Protocols At USC Training Site

In setting their 60-man player pool beyond those who were set to be part of the Opening Day roster, the Los Angeles Dodgers invited a combination of prospects, veterans and recent draft picks to participate in Summer Camp.

The Dodgers primarily kept those who going to break camp with the team at Dodger Stadium for workouts and intrasquad games — save for additional pitchers here and there. A large contingent was sent to the club’s alternate training site at USC.

However, Zach Reks, Cody Thomas and Edwin Uceta were inactive early on as each was placed on the injured list for an undisclosed reason.

When asked about the three Minor Leaguers on Aug. 11, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said they all remained on the IL. In the case of Uceta, however, he reportedly is headed for the restricted list due to a violation of protocols, according to J.P. Hoornstra of the Southern California News Group:

Minor league pitcher Edwin Uceta is going on the restricted list after he broke the team’s COVID-19 protocol

A separate report indicated Uceta returned to his native Dominican Republic prior to the Dodgers taking action. The club has not made any formal announcement on Uceta’s status.

The right-hander was among the Dodgers’ initial list of 21 non-roster invitees to 2020 Spring Training. Uceta began his professional career with the Dominican Summer League Dodgers in 2016, and joined Rookie level Ogden the following year.

The 22-year-old has reached as high as Double-A Tulsa, where he finished last season after starting off with High-A Rancho Cucamonga. Uceta went a combined 11-2 with a 2.77 ERA in 26 games (24 starts) in 2019.

Dodgers remaining at USC

When the Dodgers initially set up their alternate training site at USC, it was with the intention to eventually move to the Quakes’ facility in Rancho Cucamonga once students began arriving on campus.

However, with the university reversing their decision and electing for remote/online teaching, the Dodgers have adjusted their plans accordingly.

“The thought initially was to go back to Rancho, but fortunately — or unfortunately — school is not going back to normal, so we’re going to stay there to finish the season out,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said this week.
