Dodgers Roster: Tony Gonsolin Placed On Injured List, Garrett Cleavinger Recalled

The Los Angeles Dodgers made a flurry of roster moves prior to Saturday’s game against the Arizona Diamondbacks, which included placing Tony Gonsolin on the 10-day injured list due to right shoulder inflammation and recalling Garrett Cleavinger from Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Gonsolin is on the IL for a second time this season as he previously missed the first 60 games of the year because of the same shoulder trouble. He was activated off the 60-day IL in June and has struggled to provide much length or pitch with consistent command.

Gonsolin’s latest woes came in the series opener at Chase Field, as he only managed to record five outs. He tied a career high (first set earlier this season) with five walks and after the loss revealed there were lingering effects of shoulder trouble.

“It has its days where it doesn’t feel great but for the most part it feels good on game day,” Gonsolin said. “I’m not going to take it out of the mix (as reason for inconsistent command), but it’s no excuse to not throw strikes.”

Gonsolin is 2-1 with a 2.78 ERA but has only managed to log at least five innings in two of 10 games (nine starts).

Cleavinger is back with the Dodgers eight days after being part of multiple moves. He was eligible to return due to replacing an injured player on the active roster.

Cleavinger is 2-3 with a 2.12 ERA, 5.04 WHIP and 1.59 WHIP in 20 games this season. Along with Edwin Uceta, Cleavinger is a fresh arm for a bullpen that saw eight relievers pitch after Gonsolin in the extra-innings loss.

Dodgers may pause Kershaw

Clayton Kershaw has been scheduled to pitch in a simulated game at Camelback Ranch, but may not take the mound because of what Dodgers manager Dave Roberts referred to as “residual soreness” stemming from throwing three innings of live batting practice earlier in the week.

“Not a setback, but if we want to continue to move forward, we would like the soreness to not be an issue,” Roberts explained.
