Dodgers Roster: Ryan Pepiot Added As 27th Player For First Game Of Doubleheader Against Marlins

The Los Angeles Dodgers recalled Ryan Pepiot from Triple-A Oklahoma City prior to their first game of a split doubleheader against the Miami Marlins that was scheduled due to Hurricane Hilary.

A corresponding roster move was not required as Pepiot joined the team as the permitted 27th player. Caleb Ferguson is starting the 12 p.m. PT game as an opener.

This marks Pepiot’s first time up with the Dodgers in 2023. He earned a spot in their Opening Day rotation when Tony Gonsolin was slow to recover from a sprained ankle, but Gonsolin suffered a left oblique strain in his final tuneup.

Pepiot expected to make a relatively quick recovery but it wound up being a drawn-out process that included lingering discomfort when he first began to attempt throwing off a mound.

The Dodgers transferred Pepiot to the 60-day injured list on April 21. He began a rehab assignment with Oklahoma City on July 14 and was activated off the IL on August 3.

Pepiot was immediately optioned to OKC upon getting reinstated from the 60-day IL due to the Dodgers starting rotation being in a more stable state and the right-hander still needing to stretch out and get into a rhythm.

Shortly after, Pepiot went out and carried a perfect game into the seventh inning of a start on August 13. That earned him Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Week honors.

“He’s built up. He had a great one,” Roberts said this week. “I think for us, it’s expecting him to go out there and do it again. Right now guys are throwing the baseball well and Ryan hasn’t participated in quite some time, so to see him getting consistency with outings and pitching well is good for him.”

Ryan Pepiot moves Dodgers closer to pitching record

Pepiot is poised to become the 38th different pitcher the Dodgers have used this season, which is one shy of tying a franchise record set in 2021. Though, this season’s group includes position players Luke Williams, Yonny Hernández and Miguel Rojas (twice) being used as a pitcher.
