The Los Angeles Dodgers placed Tommy Edman on the 10-day injured list with a sprained right ankle and activated Max Muncy prior to their series opener against the St. Louis Cardinals.
Edman suffered his sprained ankle during the fifth inning of Sunday’s game. He reached on a single and aggravated his ankle while rounding first base. It marked a second time during the Dodgers’ road trip that Edman dealt with ankle trouble.
“It definitely felt a little bit worse than what I felt in Boston last week,” he said after the Dodgers’ shutout win. “Just stepped on the base weird, and kind of put my ankle in a position it didn’t want to be in. We’ll figure it out tomorrow. Probably get it checked out and see what happens.”
After Edman aggravated his ankle while running the bases against the Boston Red Sox, he was a late scratch from the lineup on July 28 and couldn’t pinch-hit in a key situation that night. There was the possibility of Edman going on the injured list the next day, but that instead wound up being Hyeseong Kim.
He also avoided the IL in early June after tweaking the ankle during a game against the New York Mets.
That came one month after Edman was put on the injured list on May 3 (retroactive to April 30) because of right ankle inflammation. His return in that instance was slightly delayed due to trouble while running, and Edman wasn’t activated until May 18.
Max Muncy returns ahead of schedule
When Muncy suffered a bone bruise in his left knee and was put on the injured list July 3, he estimated the recovery period would be six weeks. Muncy did note there was a potential to be activated prior to that point, but it wasn’t a certainty.
He wound up making steady progress over recent weeks and began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Oklahoma City on July 29. Muncy endured some struggles at the plate upon returning to game action, going 0-for-9 with five strikeouts through his first three games with the Comets.
However, he then turned a corner in the last two games, going 5-for-6 with three RBI. Muncy hit a double and home run on Sunday.
Prior to Edman’s ankle injury, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said it was possible Muncy would be activated on Monday, but at the very least anticipated it would come early in the week. Then when discussing Edman’s sprained ankle and outlook for Muncy, Roberts indicated a roster move was likely coming for the start of the Dodgers’ series with the Cardinals.
