The Los Angeles Dodgers recalled Matt Sauer and optioned Paul Gervase to Triple-A Oklahoma City ahead of their series finale against the Colorado Rockies.
Gervase was previously recalled on Wednesday and ended up pitching two innings in his Dodger debut, allowing one run on two hits with two strikeouts.
He was acquired on July 31 from the Tampa Bay Rays in the three-team trade with the Cincinnati Reds. The 25-year-old appeared in five games with the Rays this season, striking out six batters in 6.1 innings.
Overall in the Minors this year, Gervase has pitched in 33 games, tossing 49 innings with a 2.94 ERA and 72 strikeouts to just 13 walks. With OKC, he’s appeared in five games, posting a 2.08 ERA across 8.2 innings with nine strikeouts to one walk.
In four Minor League seasons, Gervase is 13-8 with a 2.93 ERA and 261 strikeouts in 162.1 innings.
Gervase is someone the Dodgers are high on, and he could become an import piece of the bullpen next season. But for now, it’s a numbers game, and he is one of the few pitchers with Minor League options remaining.
The 6-foot, 10-inch hurler was drafted by the New York Mets in the 12th round of the 2022 MLB Draft out of Louisiana State University.
Matt Sauer returns to Dodgers
Sauer returns for his fifth stint with the Dodgers after last being optioned on June 18.
He is 2-1 with 6.18 ERA in nine games, but he’s tossed 27.2 innings. Sauer has struck out 22 hitters and walked eight.
Sauer was on the Dodgers’ travel roster for the Tokyo Series and has become an innings-eater for the team when called upon.
Sauer made his MLB debut last season as a member of the Kansas City Royals and went 0-0 with a 7.71 ERA in 14 games over 16.1 innings.
With Oklahoma City so far this year, he’s gone 5-4 with a 4.86 ERA and 73 strikeouts in 76 innings.
