Dodgers Roster: Justin Bruihl Recalled, Dustin May Placed On Injured List

The Los Angeles Dodgers placed Dustin May on the 15-day injured list with a right forearm strain and recalled Justin Bruihl from Triple-A Oklahoma City prior to Thursday’s game against the St. Louis Cardinals.

May completed a scoreless first inning in his start against the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday but was replaced by Dylan Covey to begin the second frame. May’s velocity was down from his season average during the 16-pitch inning.

Other than not having the usual zip on his fastball, May did not display any signs of a potential injury. He allowed a one-out single but otherwise struck out two batters before coming out because of what the Dodgers initially deemed was right elbow pain.

Manager Dave Roberts then said after the game that an MRI revealed May had a flexor pronator strain.

While Roberts didn’t rule out the possibility of May’s injury being related to his previous Tommy John surgery in 2021, the Dodgers believe the ulnar collateral ligament in the right-hander’s surgically-repaired elbow remains intact.

May will receive a PRP injection with the hopes of avoiding season-ending surgery, but nevertheless is expected to miss an extended period of time. In nine starts this year, the 25-year-old went 4-1 with a 2.63 ERA, 3.28 FIP and 0.94 WHIP across 48 innings pitched.

Justin Bruihl back up with Dodgers

With May going on the IL, Bruihl is back up with the Dodgers for a third time this season. The left-hander had been optioned to OKC on Wednesday as a corresponding move to the Dodgers selecting the contract of Dylan Covey.

Bruihl was eligible to return sooner than the minimum 15 days after a Minor League option because he is replacing an injured player.

Bruil has pitched well for the Dodgers this season, going 1-0 with a 2.53 ERA, 2.54 FIP, 0.94 WHIP and 10.1 strikeouts per nine in 10.2 innings (nine games). He also has thrown nine scoreless frames at the Minor League level.
