The Los Angeles Dodgers recalled Garrett Cleavinger and optioned Reyes Moronta prior to Tuesday’s game against the Washington Nationals.
Moronta heads to OKC one night after needing 31 pitches to get through one inning. He issued two walks and hit a batter to load the bases, but completed a scoreless appearance by collecting three strikeouts.
It was the first time since June 28 that Moronta did not allow a run. He also produced back-to-back outings without surrendering a home run after giving up one in four straight games.
This is now a fourth time Moronta has been optioned back to the Minors, with each of those coming after May 2, when MLB began enforcing a limit of five Minor League options per season for eligible players.
Thus, Moronta could join the Dodgers at some point before the regular season concludes and only get optioned one more time without issue. After that, L.A. would need to designate him for assignment if wanting to remove Moronta from the active roster.
Dodgers bullpen adds fresh arm
In the midst of playing 18 consecutive games without a day off, Cleavinger gives the Dodgers a fresh option out of the bullpen.
He’s appeared in three games thus far, pitching to a 3.38 ERA and 1.88 WHIP. Cleavinger has gone 0-2 with a 2.79 ERA and 47 strikeouts over 29 innings pitched across 22 games for Oklahoma City this year.
The left-hander is a combined 2-4 with a 3.04 RA in 25 games (one start) over two seasons with the Dodgers.
