The Los Angeles Dodgers claimed CJ Alexander off waivers from the New York Yankees and designated Steward Berroa for assignment in a corresponding move to make room on their 40-man roster.
Berroa joined the Dodgers organization on May 12 in a trade that sent cash considerations to the Toronto Blue Jays. The deal was completed five days after the Blue Jays DFA’d Berroa.
Berroa signed with the Blue Jays as an international free agent out of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic in 2016. He made his MLB debut last year but appeared in just 28 games for Toronto.
Upon being acquired by the Dodgers, Berroa reported to Triple-A Oklahoma City. He batted .330/.424/.433 with seven doubles, one home run and 11 RBI over 27 games with the Comets. Berroa also added 11 stolen bases in 14 attempts.
Berroa’s best asset is his speed, as he’s stolen more than 40 bases in six different Minor League seasons. Berroa had a career-high 58 stolen bases in 2021.
Including time with Triple-A Buffalo before the trade, Berroa has a combined 20 stolen bases so far this season.
Why did Dodgers claim CJ Alexander?
Alexander began the 2025 season with the Athletics but was designated for assignment as part of a series of roster moves in early June.
That led to the Yankees claiming Alexander off waivers and assigning him to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. While with the RailRaiders, Alexander batted just .196/.302/.196 with three RBI, seven walks and 16 strikeouts over 13 games.
Alexander was DFA’d for a second time this season when the Yankees selected the contract of Geoff Hartlieb. That was in response to Fernando Cruz going on the 15-day injured list and required the Yankees to make room on their 40-man roster for Hartlieb, which resulted in Alexander being removed.
Alexander figures to report to Triple-A Oklahoma City but could make his way up to the Dodgers at some point if they need a position player. Alexander notably has played some third base, which could be of value to the Dodgers in the wake of Max Muncy’s left knee injury.
