Dodgers Roster: Andrew Vasquez Becomes Free Agent After Getting Non-Tendered

The Los Angeles Dodgers non-tendered Andrew Vasquez, which removed the left-handed relief pitcher from their 40-man roster and made him a free agent.

The Dodgers otherwise tendered contracts to players for the 2022 season, including their four who are eligible for salary arbitration: Cody Bellinger, Caleb Ferguson, Trea Turner and Julio Urias.

Vasquez is the second player the Dodgers have non-tendered in the past three years; Yimi Garcia suffered the same fate after the 2019 season and went on to sign with the Miami Marlins.

The Dodgers acquired Vasquez from the Minnesota Twins in a trade for Stevie Berman. It came after the trade deadline, but neither Berman nor Vasquez were on the 40-man roster, which made the Minor League swap a possibility.

Because it was finalized roughly 10 minutes before Sept. 1, Vasquez was eligible to appear in the postseason for the Dodgers. That didn’t wind up carrying any significance as the southpaw did not pitch in October.

The 28-year-old was also used sparingly during the regular season, making just two appearances despite being up with the Dodgers for multiple stints. He had three strikeouts and allowed one run on one hit over 1.2 innings across those games.

Dodgers’40-man roster

In removing Vasquez from their 40-man roster, the Dodgers created an opening that was filled hours later by the signing of Daniel Hudson to a one-year contract.

Hudson went 3-2 with a 4.11 ERA and 1.22 WHIP for the Dodgers in 2018, his lone season with the team. L.A. was linked to the veteran relief pitcher at the trade deadline this past season, but he was instead sent to the San Diego Padres.
